Our Diocese of Tabora has The Mothers’ Union Department. The Mothers’ Union is an international Christian organization dedicated to supporting families worldwide. It focuses on strengthening marriage, preserving family life, and offering support, especially during challenging times. The organization’s Christian identity is evident in its commitment to prayer and worship, which reinforces its work with families and communities.
The Mothers’ Union was founded in 1876 in the Church of England by Mary Sumner, the organization arose from her recognition of the significant responsibilities mothers face, including childcare, training, household chores, and work. She was inspired to unite mothers from all social classes, providing mutual support and training in motherhood to equip them for their roles in marriage and family life. According to Winchester Mothers’ Union, she also taught young wives how to create Christian homes and raise their children in faith.
In 1885, Mary Sumner addressed a conference, passionately highlighting the power God has given women to positively impact families, society, and nations. Her message resonated deeply, encouraging many women to establish similar gatherings in their parishes. These meetings blossomed into the Mothers’ Union, which the Bishop of Winchester declared a Diocesan Organization. The movement quickly expanded beyond Winchester, spreading to other Dioceses and Provinces of the Anglican Communion, according to Anglican Diocese of All Nations empowering women to nurture faith across generations and encourage families to boldly share the Gospel of Christ.
At The Diocese of Tabora, the Mothers’ Union supports churches through prayer and various social outreach projects. The organization provides members with training in childcare, parenting, and skills for self-reliance. It actively campaigns against issues such as violence against women and child trafficking.
Mothers’ Union is recognized as a significant women’s organization within the Anglican Communion addressing social ills and serving as the voice of women at church, diocesan, provincial, and international levels.
The Diocese of Tabora was inaugurated on 2nd July 1989. The current Diocesan Bishop is the Rt. Rev. Dr. Elias Chakupewa Mazi who was consecrated and enthroned since 29th May, 2011.
